She surmises that these children's spirits are trapped in the house, providing Crain with an "eternal family". Dr. Marrow is skeptical of Nell's claims and soon reveals his true fear study to the group, but after a statue tries to drown him, he realizes Hill House is haunted. Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and it is implied that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. The banging moves towards the nursery, where sounds of destruction are heard. Later, Eleanor's mental instability worsens as she enters the library and climbs the dilapidated spiral staircase, followed by Markway, who tries to coax her down. Startled, she nearly falls to her death before being rescued by Markway. That being said, The Haunting of Hill House unfolds at too plodding a pace and suffers from that persistent Netflix affliction of excessive running times. Nearly every episode clocks in around an hour, when 45 minutes could have gotten the job done. All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events.
